ABOUT NĀ MEAKANU

Hālau Hula Nā Meakanu O Laka O Hawaiʻi is located in Los Alamitos, CA and offers classes for all ages and levels under the direction of Kumu Hula Rolanda Mohala Reese.  Established in 1985, the mission of the school is to provide a positive environment that promotes cultural awareness among students and in the community, as well as the personal growth and development of each student.  The hālau provides formal training in the study of hula, including traditional Hawaiian dance, chants, music, language, history, values, customs, arts, and crafts.

ABOUT KUMU HULA ROLANDA MOHALA REESE

Kumu Mohala opened Hālau Hula Nā Meakanu O Laka O Hawaiʻi in 1985.  Over the last three decades, she has shared the knowledge passed down from her teachers, including Master Kumu Hula Maʻiki Aiu Lake, Master Kumu Hula Mae Kamāmalu Klein, Lani Custino, and Joseph Kamohaʻi Kahāʻulelio. She completed ʻUniki under Kumu Mae in 2003.  For more than a dozen years, she has hosted workshops, bringing legendary Kumu Hula and Hawaiian cultural practitioners to Southern California to educate the local hula community.  Also, during her many years as director of the Ke Poʻokela Cultural Foundation, she helped provide educational scholarships and staged concerts featuring renowned Hawaiʻi musicians.  Kumu Mohala serves as a part-time faculty member at Loyola Marymount University, teaching a class titled "Dance of Hawaiʻi" since 1992.
